- Almost $50 billion to be taken from poor, given to us! - In time of record profits – Bush scoffs at tax increase for Big Oil, promising veto if not removed
- Cuts on Capital Gains in jeopardy if stubborn Dems have their way.
So, it was in his name that the House and Senate heeded President Bush’s call and passed separate versions of what we’re calling the “Robbin’ the Hood” budget bills. Apparently the people who actually need programs like food stamps, student aid and Medicaid would like to keep them. (who knew?). But Americans need to understand that this budget cut is about simple math – you can’t give $70 billion in tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans without cutting at least $54 billion from somewhere; gutting services Billionaires don’t use only makes sense. $ Bush vows veto unless $4.1 billion dollar tax increase on Big Oil is removed – Because unprecedented profits in all of corporate history at a time of record deficits and cuts on services for the poor, working and middle class is no reason that we should have to pay more.
$ Capital Gains cuts also on the table – Republicans vow to continue lowered rate for the wealthy
“one way or another”.
$ It pays to subvert Democracy Quoted in various reports, including Tax Notes, a daily publication from publisher Tax Analysts, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said, "If we pass a tax bill, it's going to have extension of capital gains in it, or we won't have a tax bill. And whether we have one in the Senate or not, the House is going to have one, so it's going to be conferenceable. We'll end up with it." – CNN.com
“GOP leaders vow it will reappear before the final tax bill reaches President Bush's desk.” – the NY Times. And don’t blame us if the poor don’t have enough cash laying around to invest in the stock market. It’s not our fault they prefer to buy food and diapers instead of risky notes that may or may not provide a return somewhere down the line.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what we need to cut in order to pay for our massive lifestyle subsidies for wealthy elites. We’ll have to remember to thank our Republican stalwarts who never let a thing like compassion, fairness or humanity get in the way of that all important talking point “good for economic growth”. It’s such a good talking point, in fact, that we don’t even need to back it up with facts or proof! Huzzah!
