500,000 Protesters Barred from Central Park so Billionaires Can Play Croquet
Other Planned Events Include: Vigils for Corporate Welfare,
Billionaire Flashmobs, and a Coronation Ball
New York, NY, August 24, 2004 — Billionaires for Bush (B4B)— activists for the corporate elite — will celebrate the Republican National Convention with a wealth of events from August 29-September 1 to thank the Bush administration for ensuring that the really, really rich stay that way. These events include “Croquet in Central Park,” the “Million Billionaire March,” “Vigils for Corporate Welfare,” “Billionaire Flashmobs,” and a “Coronation Ball.” Detailed, regularly updated information on all these events can be found at: http://www.billionairesforbush.com/rnc.
At 10am on Sunday, August 29th the Billionaires will play Croquet in Central Park. The Bloomberg Administration and the NYPD have kindly agreed to bar 500,000 anti-Bush protestors from Central Park’s Great Lawn so that the Billionaires for Bush can play croquet without the distracting chants of the angry middle class. This is the first step in the Billionaires’ “Keep off the Grass” campaign to privatize Central Park.
After enjoying a game of croquet in the park, the Billionaires will assemble at noon in front of the Plaza Hotel (5th Ave. & 59th St.) for the Million Billionaire March. Dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns, and sporting signs such as “Leave No Billionaire Behind” and “Kerry/Edwards—Where’s the Greed?” Billionaires for Bush will stroll downtown, firing champagne corks at any throngs of scruffy middle-class protesters they meet along the way. At the march, the Billionaires will celebrate the success of their "Get on the Limo Swing State Summer Tour" which concludes at the RNC. As a result of the tour, over fifteen additional B4B chapters across the swing states have been started.
“Bush is the best investment we Billionaires have ever made,” said Mimi Knott-Yiu of the Boston Billionaires for Bush chapter, one of hundreds of B4B members from over 75 chapters and 30 states that will be coming to New York to join the festivities.
Later that day, at 4:30pm, the Billionaires will be on Broadway as they welcome Republican delegates to New York’s theater district for their first night on the town.
On Monday, August 30th, Billionaires for Bush will hold two “Vigils for Corporate Welfare,” to bear happy witness to the no-bid contracts, tax-abatements, corporate subsidies, and public property giveaways that the Bush administration has bestowed upon them over the last four years. Vigils will be held at Union Square at noon and at the United Nations at 4pm.
“Never before has one man done so much for so few at the expense of so many—Thank you George Bush,” said Robin Eublind of the New York chapter of Billionaires for Bush.
On Tuesday, August 31st, Billionaire Flashmobs will roam the streets of New York unsettling gatherings of Republican delegates with spontaneous outbursts of ballroom dancing, en-masse shining of shoes and three-martini lunches.
Finally, on Wednesday, September 1st, on the eve of Bush’s nomination, the Billionaires will throw one of the most anticipated of the RNC parties, a Coronation Ball extravaganza at the Frying Pan on Pier 63 from 9pm-4am. Diebold executives, members of the Supreme Court, and other partygoers will be on hand to re-appoint Bush.
